From Narrative Text to Supplicatory-Talismanic Function: An Analysis of the Transition Process of the Quranic Proposition "Lā takhaf, najawta mina al-qawmi al-ẓālimīn" from a Story-based Context to a Talismanic (Ḥirz) Tool
Abstract
The Holy Quran, as the sacred text of Muslims, has found new functions in various cultural and doctrinal contexts. A noteworthy example of this dynamism is the functional transformation of the phrase "Lā takhaf, najawta mina al-qawmi al-ẓālimīn" (Q. 28:25) from a proposition within the narrative context of the story of Prophet Moses (PBUH) into a supplicatory-talismanic tool in the Shiite tradition of prayer. This research explains how and why this semantic transition occurred. The necessity and importance of this research lie in the fact that despite the attention given by exegetical texts to the historical context of the verse and the reference of supplication texts to its talismanic use, there is a research gap regarding the systematic explanation of the mechanisms of this transformation. Accordingly, the main question of this study is: What linguistic features have made this proposition amenable to leaving its original context and acquiring a new function, and on what basis has this transformation taken place? In answer to this question, the present study, adopting a comparative-analytical method, compares the narrative-exegetical and supplicatory-talismanic discourses. The research findings show that this transformation is the product of the interaction of three main mechanisms: 1. The linguistic mechanism (brevity, the certainty of the past-tense verb, and the generality of the word "al-ẓālimīn") which has enabled abstraction from the narrative context and generalizability; 2. The psychological mechanism (identification with the archetype of Moses (PBUH) as a believer in the height of helplessness) which allows the individual to recreate the experience of salvation; 3. The theological mechanism (the generalization of the divine tradition of assistance as an ongoing law) which legitimizes this application. This research ultimately concludes that this transformation is a clear example of the secondary life of the sacred text within the context of religious culture, but at the same time, it warns against the danger of semantic reduction and neglect of the action-oriented messages of the original narrative.
