ABSTRACT
Supplication has always manifested itself in human life; however, the prayers articulated by the inerrant Imams (AS) possess a particular distinction. One of these exceptional collections is the supplications transmitted from Imam Sajjād (AS), known as the precious al-Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādīya, often called “the Psalms of the Household of Muhammad.” In these prayers, Imam Sajjād (AS), particularly in the thirty-first supplication, refers to the “afflictions of the heart” and seeks refuge in God from them. Understanding these afflictions, alongside recognizing their remedies based on the Imam’s own supplications, holds great significance for purifying the hearts of individuals within the Islamic community. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the concept of “afflictions of the heart” and to identify their remedies based on selected passages from al-Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādīya. Using a descriptive–analytical method combined with an elicitative approach to the concepts within the prayers, the study concludes that the heart, throughout the course of life, may become afflicted with disorders in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions. Each of these can be treated through specific strategies explored in the research, such as adherence to the Qur’an and the Ahl al-Bayt, expansion of the breast (spiritual openness), attaining divine pleasure, and more. Attention to the afflictions of the heart and knowledge of their remedies—so as to eliminate them from individual and collective human life—is emphasized as a religious duty within the supplications of al-Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādīya.

The well-being of human life in this noisy, material world depends on the health of one of the most vital organs of human existence—the heart. When this organ functions properly, it yields positive outcomes; but when it becomes afflicted, its negative consequences can exert pressure on both the individual and society across cognitive, psychological, and behavioral dimensions. Beyond this, such afflictions will expose a person, in the Hereafter, to eternal punishment in the fire of Hell. Thus, salvation from worldly hardships and otherworldly torment lies in recognizing the diseases of the heart and understanding the strategies for their treatment.
