ABSTRACT
Utilizing the epistemological teachings found in the supplications of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) guides members of society toward the path of guidance and felicity. The supplication of Abu Hamzah al-Thumali is one such prayer that can shed light on the pathways for escaping sin. In this study, using thematic analysis and conducting both quantitative and qualitative examinations of the supplication of Abu Hamzah al-Thumali, three categories of cognitive, motivational, and behavioral strategies for liberation from sin have been analyzed. This article demonstrates that the strategies for escaping sin in this supplication are not limited to mystical or emotional recommendations; rather, they articulate a precise structure of returning to one’s innate nature within an integrated cognitive, motivational, and behavioral system. Imam al-Sajjad (a.s.), in this supplication, provides a roadmap for escaping sin by considering the multidimensional nature of the human being. In the cognitive dimension, emphasis on the vastness of divine mercy, recognition of God as the sole refuge, and awareness of human shortcomings together provide the foundation for intellectual transformation and the cultivation of hope. In the motivational dimension, the interplay of fear and hope, expressions of helplessness, and the appeal to divine love play a significant role in generating an inner inclination toward return. In the behavioral dimension, actions such as supplication, fulfilling divine obligations, and confessing one’s sins are introduced as practical steps for departing from sin. This study shows that the supplication of Abu Hamzah, through its precise language, delineates a coherent spiritual framework for the moral refinement and ethical transformation of the sinner. It offers an integrated model of knowledge, motivation, and action for returning to the path of servitude—one that has practical implications for religious and moral education.

Utilizing the epistemological teachings of the supplications of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) guides the members of society to the path of guidance and happiness. Abu Hamzah al-Thumali's supplication is one of the supplications that can provide enlightenment in identifying ways to escape from sin. Examining the content of various supplications and supporting psychological science shows that in order to do a successful job and achieve the desired result, there is a need to work in the three areas of cognition, motivation, and behavior. The main question of the present study is what are the strategies for escaping from sin and returning to divine mercy? Although, in the research, articles, and books related to noble supplications, the category of sin, its causes and consequences, and how to escape from it have been sporadically addressed; however, this has not been done analytically and based on the content analysis method, focusing on Abu Hamzah's supplication and in a coherent manner in these three areas, which is the aim of this study. Content analysis is one of the methods of recognizing, analyzing, and reporting patterns in qualitative data. This model is a process for analyzing textual data and transforms various and scattered data into detailed data. From a methodological perspective, the content analysis of this study was based on the precise coding of the prayer text, identification of basic, organizing, and comprehensive themes, and finally drawing the network of themes. The data show that the high frequency of statements related to prayer, fear and hope, and recognition of divine mercy confirms that Abu Hamza's prayer, with its specific spiritual structure, is systematically explaining the path of the sinner's return. In this prayer, Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) designed a roadmap for escaping from sin by considering the existential dimensions of man. In the cognitive field, themes such as "recognizing the vastness of divine mercy", "recognizing God as the only refuge", and "recognizing man's guilt in the face of divine greatness" were the most frequent. These cognitions pave the way for a change in man's attitude towards sin, himself, and God, and provide the prerequisites for return. In the motivational dimension, the combination of fear and hope, expressing helplessness, and seeking divine love play an important role in creating an inner desire to return. In the field of behavioral strategies, the three main elements of "praying", "task-oriented", and "confessing sin" have been introduced as the most frequent suggested actions for returning from sin. This research shows that Abu Hamza's prayer, with precise language, outlines a coherent spiritual structure in the education and moral development of the sinner and presents a combined model of knowledge, motivation, and action for returning to the path of servitude, which is applicable in religious education and ethics.
