Interweaving Islamic Rhetoric and Modern Linguistics: A Qualitative and Quantitative Stylistic Analysis of the Makarim al-Akhlaq Supplication in the Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya

The Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, a collection of supplications attributed to Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin (AS), is celebrated for its literary eloquence and spiritual depth, earning it the title “The Psalms of the Household of Muhammad.” As one of the most prominent Shi‘i religious texts, it exemplifies the fusion of linguistic artistry and devotional expression. This study integrates ʿAbd al-Qahir al-Jurjani’s theory of Nazm (linguistic organization) from classical Islamic rhetoric—which emphasizes syntactic arrangement to enhance meaning and emotional resonance—with rhetorical features such as metaphor, simile, paronomasia, and syntactic parallelism. These are combined with modern linguistic frameworks, including Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, Halliday and Hasan’s model of textual cohesion, and Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, to conduct a stylistic analysis of the Makarim al-Akhlaq supplication. The study examines the linguistic, rhetorical, and narrative features of the prayer, demonstrating how elements such as the metaphor “faith as light,” the simile “remembrance as a continuous flow,” the paronomasia between akrim and akhlaq, and the repetition of the invocation “Allāhumma” in 85% of clauses strengthen its narrative cohesion and moral-spiritual effect. Quantitative analysis using AntConc (for examining lexical frequency and linguistic patterns) and NVivo (for thematic and semantic coding) indicates that lexical roots associated with moral virtues recur in 40% of the clauses, confirming thematic continuity and rhythmic unity. This interdisciplinary research, by presenting an integrative framework linking Islamic rhetoric with linguistic analysis, offers a deeper understanding of the Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya and provides a comprehensive model for the stylistic analysis of Shi‘i religious texts.
