The central concept of the “Perfect Man”—particularly as theorized within Ibn ʿArabi’s mystical framework—alongside the foundational status of the Infallible Imam in Shiʿi theology, has provided fertile ground for interpretive inquiry. Certain perspectives within the Shiʿi tradition have regarded these two notions as incompatible, viewing the mystical interpretation as being in tension with the divinely ordained rank of the Imam. Proceeding from the hypothesis of a deep harmony between the essential features of the Perfect Man and the attributes of the Imam—features that can be traced in authentic Shiʿi sources—this study conducts a comparative analysis centered on the seminal text Ziyarat Jamiʿa Kabira to examine the alleged contradiction. Using a descriptive-analytical method with a comparative approach, the research first identifies the main components of the Perfect Man from the perspective of Ibn ʿArabi’s school of thought, and then, through a content analysis of Ziyarat Jamiʿa Kabira, investigates the manifestation of these components in the attributes ascribed to the Infallible Imams. The findings reveal a remarkable and profound consonance across multiple dimensions. The key characteristics of the Perfect Man—including the supreme manifestation of the Divine Names and Attributes and existential comprehensiveness (al-kawn al-jāmiʿ), possession of divinely bestowed and all-encompassing knowledge, absolute infallibility and purity, a central role in the cosmic order (as mediators of grace, bearers of wilāya takwīniyya, and preservers of creation), a unique ontological relation with the Divine (marked by nearness and immanence), and absolute preeminence in rank—are all clearly and emphatically reflected in Ziyarat Jamiʿa Kabira regarding the Infallible Imams. The study’s conclusion, while confirming the main hypothesis, demonstrates that Ziyarat Jamiʿa Kabira, as an authoritative text, not only refutes the alleged incompatibility but also provides grounds for an interpretation in which the Infallible Imam is presented as the most complete embodiment of the Perfect Man within the framework of Shiʿi teachings. This research underscores the profound capacity of Shiʿi hadith and devotional literature to elucidate mystical concepts and to bridge theoretical mysticism with Imami theology.
