ABSTRACT
Cohesion is a semantic concept that addresses the relationships within a text, establishing connections between its components. A text is not merely composed of one or more elements or sentences with specific meanings; rather, there are relationships between the sentences within the text that enable the reader to easily understand the message. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan published a collaborative work titled ‘Cohesion in English’ in 1976, in which they examined the links between the parts of a text. These two linguists categorized the factors that create cohesion in a text into three categories: grammatical cohesive devices (reference, ellipsis, and substitution), lexical cohesive devices (repetition and collocation), and conjunctive cohesive devices (additive, causal, adversative, and temporal). The Sha’baniya Prayer is among the supplications whose parts are so interconnected that they form a continuous flow of supplication, monotheism, and request from God. Each section of the prayer has a semantic connection with the preceding and following sections, ultimately displaying an overall picture of the relationship between humans and God. In this research, conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, reference, as one of the grammatical cohesive devices, is examined in this prayer. The results of this research indicate that pronouns, demonstrative nouns, and relative pronouns are skillfully used as tools to create semantic coherence, emphasize key concepts, and strengthen emotional connection in this prayer.
