The Benefits and Effects of Petitionary Prayer in the Contemporary Islamic Philosophy
Abstract
One of the fundamental religious teachings that has received great attention in Islamic texts and traditions is prayer (du‘a). The significance of this practice is so profound that neglecting it deprives a person of many blessings. The fact that in Islamic texts, prayer is mentioned as the core of worship or that divine grace is considered to be directed by the prayers of servants shows the importance and status of this religious teaching. This article, relying on library sources and using a descriptive-analytical method, seeks to answer the question of whether the value and function of prayer can be explained from a philosophical perspective? And can prayer be valuable and influential in human life from different perspectives? Given the fact that Muslim philosophers, especially Mulla Sadra and his followers, have been always defending the alignment of philosophy with religion, the focus of this research will be on the Islamic philosophy and specifically on the views of the contemporary Muslim philosophers. An examination of the effects and functions of prayer in the works of the contemporary Muslim philosophers leads us to a new classification of six approaches regarding the benefits and effects of prayer. The findings of the research show that in the thoughts of the contemporary Islamic philosophers, prayer includes several goods and benefits, such as understanding God's lordship, acknowledging servitude, and appreciating the intrinsic value of prayer, which indicate the effectiveness and value of prayer in human life and his relationship with God and other human beings.
