A Semantic Analysis of Hujub al-Nur in the Shabaniyah Supplications: A Quranic Approach
Abstract:
The noble Shabaniyah Supplication is one of the most significant prayers narrated from the infallible Imams (peace be upon them), holding a prominent position in religious and mystical literature. Imam Khomeini (may his soul rest in peace) also emphasized its importance, considering it among the few supplications to which all the infallibles (peace be upon them) were deeply devoted. Among its profound passages, the phrase “until the eyes of hearts pierce the veils of light and reach the source of majesty, and our spirits become suspended in the glory of Your sanctity” has garnered special attention due to its rich content and deep meaning.
This study, drawing upon Quranic, narrational, and mystical evidence, aims to provide a precise understanding of the nature and referents of this concept. Although the exact phrase is not explicitly mentioned in the Qur'an, related verses have been conceptually analyzed, and associated meanings have been extracted. The findings indicate that the term Hujub al-Nur (veils of light) refers to barriers to divine luminous manifestations. Despite being guiding and enlightening, these manifestations, due to their intensity and grandeur, themselves become obstacles to the direct witnessing of the Absolute Divine Essence. Some of these veils can be pierced during stages of spiritual journeying, while others remain impenetrable even at the highest levels of nearness.
