Validation and Response to Doubts Regarding the Supplication “Ya Man Arjuhu” with an Analytical Approach
Abstract:
Supplication is a means of communication between humans and the Creator of the universe, and it is recommended by religious leaders who themselves gave it more attention than others and even before them. They made use of specific times and transmitted prayers to seek divine mercy and forgiveness. For the month of Rajab—which is known as the springtime of worship and supplication, and a month of abundant divine goodness and special mercy—many supplications have been transmitted from the Infallible Imams (peace be upon them) as both specific and general recommended acts. Among them is the well-known supplication “Ya Man Arjuhu Li-Kulli Khayr” which is recited after obligatory prayers. The author of the book Critique of Hadith Books considers this supplication unreliable due to the presence of Muhammad ibn Sinan in the chain of transmission, deeming it unauthentic in terms of isnād (chain of narration), and flawed in terms of matn (text) because of its alleged contradiction with certain Quranic verses. This article adopts a library-based research method and employs a critical-analytical approach to evaluate and critique his claims. The findings indicate that Muhammad ibn Sinan was among the trusted transmitters of the Imamiyya and a close companion of the Imams. Most accusations of exaggeration (ghulūw) against him either lack a connected chain of transmission or originate from extremist groups (ghulāt). The trust placed in him by Qummi narrators, his conduct differing from that of extremists, and the content of his narrations on jurisprudential and ethical topics, all point to his particular attention to religious matters. Furthermore, the two words sakhat (wrath) and makr (deceit) have different meanings and are not interchangeable. Sakhat is the opposite of rida (satisfaction) and means displeasure, while makr means divine planning or strategy. Therefore, seeking refuge from God's sakhat is not contradictory to the Quranic notion of not feeling secure from God's makr.
