Validation of the Sanamayn Quraysh Supplication
Abstract:
The Sanamayn Quraysh supplication, attributed to Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him), has gained popularity among a segment of Shiites in recent years and has always had both supporters and opponents. It is believed that the lack of a unified view regarding this supplication may lead to further division among Shiites. The distinct content of this supplication appears to set it apart from other transmitted supplications, particularly as the analysis of the arguments of both proponents and critics highlights the necessity of scrutinizing it further. The present study, adopting an analytical-critical approach, investigates the sources of the supplication and examines its textual and chain-of-narration validity, along with an analysis of the arguments for and against its acceptance. The findings reveal that the earliest source for this supplication is the book Rashh al-Walā fī Sharḥ al-Duʿāʾ by Abū Saʿādāt Asʿad ibn ʿAbd al-Qāhir Iṣfahānī (d. 635 AH). This supplication does not appear in early, reliable hadith sources, and its content bears no resemblance to other supplications transmitted from Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him). The expression of sufferings and tribulations following the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) demise is regarded as the central theme of this supplication, but its tone is not consistent with other supplications attributed to the Imam. Moreover, discontinuity in the chain of transmission and textual instability—particularly the repeated shifts in pronouns—pose a serious challenge to the attribution of this supplication to an infallible Imam.
