Reinvestigating the Attribution of Izāghah to God in the Supplication of the "Rāsikhūn fi’l-ʿIlm"
Abstract:
Supplication and prayer to God, as the connecting link between humans and the Divine, have always manifested throughout human life. However, the form and content of these prayers vary across individuals. One such distinctive supplication is the prayer of the Rāsikhūn fi’l-ʿilm (those firmly grounded in knowledge) in the context of the revelation of the divine scripture and in relation to the clear (muḥkam) and ambiguous (mutashābih) verses. Since this supplication includes a plea for God not to cause deviation (izāghah), and given that God is absolute goodness, analyzing the attribution of izāghah to God becomes a matter of significant importance. The interpretive approaches of Sunni and Shi'a exegetes differ on this matter. The aim of this study is to analyze these differing approaches. The findings of the research—conducted through a descriptive-analytical method and an interrogative approach to Qur'anic concepts by examining the issue within the context of the verses, as well as the coherence and relationship between general and specific, and absolute and restricted verses—lead to this important conclusion: regardless of the theological differences among the Ashʿarites, Muʿtazilites, and Imamiyyah regarding the interpretation of the supplication of the Rāsikhūn, it appears that, at times, the conversation between the Perfect Human and God, in the act of requesting, manifests in its deepest form—as an intimate, loving whisper (munājāt ʿāshiqāneh).
