Conceptual Metaphor "Pilgrimage is Business" in the Arbaeen Noha Tijārat Lan Tabūr Based on Lakoff and Johnson's Theory
Abstract
Conceptual metaphor is one of the key approaches in semantics within cognitive linguistics. According to this theory, first introduced by Lakoff and Johnson, people use metaphorical systems to express abstract concepts. By mapping mental concepts onto concrete examples, they make their ideas more comprehensible, facilitating understanding for others. "Noha" (lamentation), as a literary form, is deeply rooted in Shia culture in both form and content, with the general public and street audiences as its main recipients. This genre also employs conceptual metaphors to more effectively express mourning for the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). The present study, using a descriptive-analytical method and based on Lakoff and Johnson’s theory of conceptual metaphor, examines how the conceptual metaphor "Pilgrimage is Business" is applied in the Arbaeen lament Tijārat Lan Tabūr. This lament, performed in 2017 by the Iraqi reciter Mulla Basim Karbalai, is one of the most popular laments in recent years during the Arbaeen commemoration of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). The findings of this study indicate that, in order to enhance the understanding of the significance and value of pilgrimage to Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), the lament applies the structured and tangible concept of business (Tijārat) as the source domain to represent the abstract concept of pilgrimage (Ziyārat) as the target domain. Additionally, the application of business-related elements (such as investment, buyer, seller, capital, and profit) to aspects of pilgrimage (such as visiting, the pilgrim, the Imam, and seeking blessings) is rooted in the religious perspective and Shia beliefs of the lament’s composer. This metaphor also aligns with Quranic and narrational sources that emphasize the spiritual merit and rewards of visiting Imam Hussain.
