The Role of Counter-Discourse in the Formation of Social and Cultural Identities (Case Study: The Fifth Prayer of Sahifa Sajjadiyeh)
Abstract:
As a religious text, the fifth prayer of Sahifa Sajjadiyeh conveys profound messages about the relationship between humanity and God, society, and power. Through the creation of a strong counter-discourse against many common beliefs and values, this prayer serves as a source of inspiration for individuals seeking spirituality and justice. The aim of this article is to examine the fundamental impact of counter-discourses on shaping the ideology of texts, especially the text of this prayer. The research question centers on how counter-discourse, as a fundamental linguistic process, plays a pivotal role in the construction of meaning, identity formation, and the exercise of power. To evaluate the hypotheses, this study employs critical discourse analysis, with the goal of examining the practical effects of applying counter-discourse within the prayer text to elucidate the worldview embedded within it. The results demonstrate that Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him), through deep philosophical, social, and political concepts presented in this prayer, operates as a counter-discursive text by raising fundamental questions and challenging common beliefs and power structures. In the fifth prayer, various counter-discourses—such as power, knowledge, justice, fatalism, individualism, materialism, and oppression—are identified. By emphasizing God's absolute authority over limited earthly powers, this prayer implicitly critiques political and social power structures. Moreover, by highlighting unity with God and humanity's dependence on Him, it critiques excessive individualism and person-centered views of life. Additionally, by calling for justice and divine mercy, it challenges the injustices prevalent in the world. These counter-discourses aim to foster a more just, spiritual, and ethically grounded society.
