Comparative Content Analysis of Arafa Prayer Narrated by Imam Hussein and Arafa Prayer Narrated by Imam Sajjad
Abstract:
One of the major concerns of Islamic scholars is the necessity of employing modern interdisciplinary research methods alongside traditional approaches for the critique and understanding of religious texts. Among these text-focused and documentary research methods suitable for analyzing religious texts, the method of "content analysis" stands out, which has various quantitative and qualitative techniques. It is essential to adapt these techniques to suit the unique nature of religious texts. In this research, an effort has been made to align this method for the critique and understanding of religious texts by explaining the functions and differences between two techniques: "thematic content analysis" and "categorical content analysis." To this end, by selecting two texts of the Arafa prayer narrated by Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and the Arafa prayer narrated by Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) as the research sample, an attempt was made to examine the geometric structure of each prayer and the structural and content relationship between them. The findings of the research indicate that the emphasis on theology with a unified model and the introduction of religious guides are the most significant common features of these two texts. Meanwhile, explaining the needs of the people during the lifetime of each Imam is the point of difference between the texts of the two prayers. This difference results in Imam Hussein's Arafa prayer (peace be upon him) addressing anthropology and explaining the position of individuals in Islamic society, while Imam Sajjad's Arafa prayer (peace be upon him) addresses Imamology and elucidates the duties of Shiites towards the pure Imams (peace be upon them). Therefore, each text, independently of the other, possesses specific religious and social functions.
