Asking for Forgiveness Regarding Forgetfulness and Mistakes from a Legal Perspective in Verse 286 of Surah Al-Baqarah
Abstract
Prayer is not only for seeking needs but also a means for self-purification, approaching God, and reaching a monotheistic society. A monotheistic society cannot be established without observing the rights of people and the rights of Allah. According to the supplication contained in verse 286 of Surah Al-Baqarah, forgiveness is sought for human forgetfulness and error. The question is, what is the purpose of asking for forgiveness despite the absence of malice, and what is the effect of asking for forgiveness? In this article, through a library study and using analytical and descriptive methods, it is shown that forgetfulness and error, if they have discretionary grounds and are not based on intentional fault, may lead to the removal of a mandatory ruling in special circumstances based on the Hadith of Removal. However, it does not result in the lifting of a positive ruling, and asking for forgiveness has no effect in this regard. The removal of the ruling in such cases is not only a blessing but also requires that any damage caused to others must be compensated. Although forgetfulness and mistakes may be due to negligence, respecting the rights of people and compensating for damages as a prelude will lead to answered prayers. Failure to observe this is one of the obstacles to answered prayers.
