Implications of Sahifa Sajjadiya on the issue of population quantity and the derived perspectives from them
Mohammad Javad Saqai Biriya[1]
Abstract
Population issues have been discussed by social scientists for a long time. The sources of Islamic knowledge, like “Sahifah Sajjadiyah”, also have indications worthy of attention. The method of research is case-documentary, that is, it is mainly focused on Sahifah Sajjadiyah, and its judging method is ijtihad-interpretive and its indicator is the number of children. Its purpose is to examine the implications of this scripture on the issue of population size and to discover the view of Imam Sajjad, (pbuh), on this matter. The main results of this research are desire to have many children, expressing gratitude to Allah for bestowing many children, requesting ample sustenance in old age, and asking to deprive enemies of the ability to have children are the direct passages expressing the desire of having many children. While the literary references to the collective terms "Wuld" and "Olad" conceal the mystery of the limited number of children among some Muslims, guiding inclinations and behaviors through divine direction, combining knowledge with action, and commanding individuals and organs are accompanied by indirect allusions to population-related considerations in Sahifa, emphasizing the desirability of such practices. Some other indications are taking advantage of opportunities, perfecting every virtue, asking for the highest blessings, and increasing the number of border guards. The result of studying and examining these passages - especially with the inclusion of the child-having “sirah” of Ahlul-Bayt - is that from the perspective of Imam Sajjad (pbuh) the abundance of children for Muslims to the extent that families can afford, is desirable in Islam. It means that it is desirable for every family to have as many children as possible for them.
Keywords: population, desire to have children, childbearing, demographic implications, Sahifah Sajjadiyah, Imam Sajjad.
